New Anime Series: No-Rin

First Episode(s) Review for: No-Rin
Summary:

A lad at a country farm school dreams of going to Toykyo and becoming a trendy farmer which is really just an excuse to send vegetables to the Idol that he is besotted with, when this Idol retires he is devastated, but then she turns up at his school as a transfer student….what could her reason be??

Animation:

Completely standard Anime animation, better than western but nothing to see here, moving on

Plot Potential:

This I feel will not be a plot strong Anime, but that’s OK, its lots of fun to watch

Music:

Lovely Idol Pop tunes with jolly opening and closing themes

Reminds me of:

Yakitate!! Japan and an “Popular person falls for everyday Joe” anime something like Maid Sama

Overall:

A genuinely funny Anime, the first one this season to make me laugh out loud, not one of the great plot series but treat it as a sitcom and you will be in for a good time

New Anime Series: Noragmi

First Episode(s) Review for: Noragmi
Summary:

A young down on his luck homeless God or as he calls himself “A delivery God” is struggling his way though life, till he is saved from a passing bus by a young girl, the incident gives the girl the ability to leave her body, something she wants fixed, enter the world of street level small gods and their regalia

Animation:

Good high detail animation the kind I associated with high action anime (I wonder if they get slowed down a lot and replayed one frame at a time), very nice and clear with excellent use of colour such as pastels at emotional times and mono chrome on the opening sequence

Plot Potential:

I have a week spot of any story to do with gods but this has tons of potential but currently no direction so I think it MIGHT be a great series, as long as the opportunity it has is not wasted.

Music:

Hooray the first MP3 player worthy opening theme this season, the rest of the music in this series is a bit ho-hum

Reminds me of:

bit of Yozakura Quartet bit of XxxHolic

Overall:

So its basically the life of a street gang but in the supernatural world, good stuff, the characters are nothing new, but its still very much worth watching especially if the plot lives up to its potential.

New Anime Series: Nobunagun

First Episode(s) Review for: Nobunagun
Summary:

Violent dreams haunt a somewhat forgetful and easy goring girl, she is a bit of a flake but bumbles though life happily enough, that is until aliens arrive at a field trip, and she turns out to have the memories of a great Japanese military commander and the giant cannons to match.

Animation:

A mix of open and cheerful for the human areas and dark and brooding the the dream sequences, A very nice touch is the use of coloured shadows to show a persons type i.e. normal girls get flowers in their shadows while the heroine gets camouflage colours

Plot Potential:

This depends, it could be as a simple power ranger series or as serious a samurai drama, hard to tell at this point as there is a mix of smiling bouncy bits and people with swords thought their bellies

Music:

Alt Rock though out, fairly generic stuff but good beats

Reminds me of:

Time travel between Neon Genesis Evangelion and Samurai Gun with a chunk of the plot of Gate Keepers

Overall:

I am pleasantly surprised with this Anime it feels like it should be a jolly little jokey super powered team Anime, but it is far darker in execution, a real dark horse of the season, well worth watching.

New Anime Series: Magical Warfare

First Episode(s) Review for: Magical Warfare
Summary:

A normal Japanese high school boy who happens to be good at Kendo (stop me if you have heard this one before) Saves a young female magician who is being being hunted by her brain washed brother and his gang of evil magicians, the young lads friends join the fight and start manifesting magic of their own (to much comic surprise)

Animation:

The quality varies at different times, you get the feeling that the the artists who are painting the backgrounds are more talented than the ones drawing the characters, but still excellent quality all rounds

Plot Potential:

After a very grim start, it moves happily into “you perv” misunderstanding territory and then back to grim, then on to standard high school battle territory (where the only loser seems to be concrete), it looks like we are going to have to save the world again with the help of epic battles series, but I do like the “attack a magician with magic in the living world and get stripped of your magic” touch

Music:

Good rousing opening music and solid rock end theme, the kind of music that makes people new to anime go “Cooo!! they have proper music on these cartoons”

Reminds me of:

Code Geass is obviously a huge influence but with shades of Tenchi Muyo and a pinch of Needless

Overall:

The visual aspect of this anime totally out ways the plot, but hopefully that should improve, in the mean time its a solid series you could recommend to someone new to the genre, minor note: whats with the bloody stupid swords!!, there are hundreds of viable sword shapes without making up ones that would be naff to use

New Anime Series: Nobunaga The Fool

First Episode(s) Review for: Nobunaga The Fool
Summary:

I gifted young girl and a brave Nobel lord feel each others presence from across the world, while the young man is involved in a war to determine the fate of Japan, will his love from far away be able to reach him and avert the death of millions….oh and here come the Mecha, Yus!!! :)

Animation:

Lovely, really detailed and nice, with lots of shine, one of those anime that you show to people as an introduction to what quality animation looks like

Plot Potential:

I love a good Japanese steam punk battle, this one is totally epic, and wonderful to behold, the plot is growing with lots going on and if it is half as good as the visuals we will be in for a treat

Music:

Good operatic battle music, made me what to call out Guards, Knights, Squires Prepare for battle!!

Reminds me of:

Bits of Fate Stay Night, bits of samurai gun with characters from the Lotus Wars series

Overall:

Conflict, fire, battle, betrayal and love across boundaries, its a sort of Arthurian Legend with knights of the round table from both Europe and Japan all beating the hell out of each other, Its the first epic Anime of the season, bring it on!!

New Anime Series: Hozuki no Reitstsu

First Episode(s) Review for: Hozuki no Reitstsu
Summary:

The bureaucracy of hell is over worked and filled with incompetents, only the second in charge knows what’s going on and can keep control of things, in what is essentially a Japanese Carry on series set in the nether world.

Animation:

Bouncy, colourful with a wide mixture of styles representing the various moods of the different scenes.

Plot Potential:

It’s like an office sitcom, just in hell, there was much laughing from the other house residents

Music:

Upbeat traditional Japanese accompanying music.

Reminds me of:

Its a lot like XxxHolic with the humour from the underworld section of Dragon Ball Z and shades of plot from the Black Butler

Overall:

Gibbering insanity but good fun, with loads of WTF moments

New Anime Series: Hamatora

First Episode(s) Review for: Hamtora
Summary:

A group of down on their luck (cash poor) super powered bounty hunters go about their daily business…..well that’s it really…problems with money, comedy shouting, revealing of super powers…

Animation:

Normal Anime Quality, but they have pushed up the brightness on the primary colours a lot to give it some ‘pop’ makes it look a bit like an American 80’s comic book.

Plot Potential:

At first sight there is nothing new here not even the super powers (though I was surprised to find sound as the primary characters super power as that is normally a bad guy type of power), I suspect we will have to wait a few episodes to see if it improves.

Music:

Nothing leaps out, its suitable for content but that’s it

Reminds me of:

This is totally a Get Backers knock off

Overall:

Its fun, and a pleasant background, but it fells like it is not the work of one persons vision, which I always feel is what sets out the great Anime/Manga, a brief net search revels it to be a constructed anime or “mixed-media project” well lets give it a few episodes.

New Anime Series: Buddy Complex

First Episode(s) Review for: Buddy Complex
Summary:

The Schools “nice guy that is nearly super naturally good at everything” is tootling though his life being cool and nice to his friends when a giant mecha suddenly appears driven by a guy with a major hate-on, our hero is saved by a blushing female class mate with her own Mecha (never mind where did she hide it, why is the damn thing pink), it turns out he is something major in the future and that the people with the mecha are time travellers, will he fulfil his destiny? lets us fly to the future to find out!

Animation:

Excellent quality semi realistic, a mix between full realistic such as Ghost in the Shell and semi flat cell such as A Certain Magical Index

Plot Potential:

This has the look of a “a good guy amazingly gifted with mecha who turns to evil, and then is saved from this path by people from the future”… errr…wasn’t this the plot for Megas XLR

Update: The plot does have more to offer which shows it self in the second episode when you see the “buddy complex” in action

Music:

It would appear the directors raided Michael Bays music cast offs

Reminds me of:

Well every Gundam series for a start, but more like Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar with less harem and more shooting

Overall:

I don’t feel that this one is going to be more than a nice background anime, but its been a while since we have have a good mecha battle and the hero is a nice bloke so worth a watch.

Update: episode 2 adds more depth to the the series when the “buddy complex” comes into play.

New Anime Series: Witch Craft Works

First Episode(s) Review for: Witch Craft Works
Summary:

A silent withdrawn lad is picked on all the time for being physically near (same bus, desks near each other) the school beauty and mayors daughter, suddenly he discovers a large school building is being dropped on him from a great height, this surprise is nothing compared to the discovery that the school beauty has been staying near him to protect him, she is a “Fire witch” and that he is her “princess”….. Mecha Bunnies ATAAACK!!

Animation:

Higher than normal quality anime with a little bit of CGI mixed in

Plot Potential:

Its nice to see the gender roles reversed so completely in an anime, rather than a mealy having a bossy girl and the boy being patient with her, I really like the main female character it good to see the strong silent type getting the main role

Music:

End tune is really upbeat and fun (totally worth going on your mp3 player), rest of the music and sound effects less so

Reminds me of:

A gender reversed version of A_Certain_Magical_Index

Overall:

Really nicely paced and very engaging characters, even the main male character does not make me want to kill him which is rare, really looking forward to each episode,

New Anime Series: Kyoukai No Kanata

First Episode(s) Review for: Kyoukai No Kanata
Summary:

A nice and understanding lad who helps others whenever he can but is a half demon is brutally stabbed but a nice and shy girl who happens to be a cursed demon slayer, despite this tricky start they are thrown together and try to get on while dealing with a whole truckload of emotional baggage (and demons)

Animation:

Another example of my favourite type of soft tone anime, as if everything is filmed on a summer afternoon.

Plot Potential:

Plenty of meat here, they have used a lot of rich settings and good characters, so lots to work with, looking forward to see if the main bad guy is as interesting as the good guys.

Music:

Just like a serious high school “soap” anime but with fight scenes

Reminds me of:

Errr well, imagine if Akane from Ranma 1/2 became a demon hunter in the setting of K-On! and you are nearly there

Overall:

I nice little series, Gripping enough to require your attention with good visuals and likable characters, thoroughly enjoying it and save for PG viewers.
