Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)

1. State-licensed individual who specializes in surgical procedures involving the teeth and surrounding oral tissues. Operative dental surgeon restores teeth that have been damaged. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in surgical reconstruction of facial malformations caused by diseases of or trauma to mouth, face, head, or neck. Exodontists limit their practice to surgical removal of teeth. Oral surgeons specialize in surgical removal of teeth and surrounding oral tissues. 2. Under the Medicare program, a dentist for purposes of reimbursement is paid only with respect to surgery related to the jaw or any structure contiguous to the jaw or the reduction of any fracture of the jaw or facial bone.

Doctor of Medicine (MD)

Health professional who has completed an approved course of study at an approved medical school, has satisfactorily passed the National Board of Examination, has done hospital internship or residency, and has obtained a state license to practice. Some physicians may elect to further train in a specialty such as allergy, cardiology, dermatology, or orthopedic surgery.

Doctor of Optometry (OD)

Individual who has received training and is educated in the testing and correction of vision problems. He or she has obtained a degree of Doctor of Optometry (OD) after completion of 3 years of college followed by 4 years in an approved college of optometry and passing a state examination and receiving a license. Also called optometrist .

Doctor of Osteopathy (DO or MD)

Physician trained in osteopathic medicine who may use diagnostic and therapeutic methods of standard medicine and is trained in therapeutic manipulation of the spine. License to perform medicine and surgery is required in all states. A DO may use the initials MD after their name in some states, and he or she is eligible for reimbursement by Medicare and Medicaid for professional services given to patients. Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM)

Doctor trained in the examination, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, conditions, and malfunctions affecting the human foot and its related structures. Podiatrists may use medical, surgical, or other means of therapy. Specialties of podiatric medicine consist of podiatric orthopedics, podiatric public health, and podiatric surgery.
