Legal father

Male who is considered under the law to be the father of a child but may not necessarily be the biological father. Definitions vary by state, but most common is “the man married to the birth mother at the time of birth.” In adoption cases, the legal father is called the father of the adoptee and his rights must be terminated for an adoption to be carried out.

Legal Hazard

An increase in the likelihood that a loss will occur because of statute, court actions, or administrative regulations. For example, a government agency rules that a particular product may cause cancer and should be removed from the marketplace. A firm that manufactures such a product could become the object of lawsuits arising out of the use of its product because of the new regulation.

Legal health record

Patient medical record that complies with federal, state, and local laws and a definition developed by each organization based on its needs and what it requires to fulfill its mission. Each organization has its own custom legal health record definition.

Legal Liability

Any liability imposed on a person by a Court of Law.

UK: Liability attaching to a party because of the breach of a legal duty or by way of statute. Employers’ liability, public liability insurances, etc., insure the legal liability of the insured and not the injury, damage or loss suffered by the third party. If there is no legal liability there will be no payment to an injured claimant. The allegation of liability is sufficient to give the insured access to the insurer’s help by way of defence costs and claims handling.
