Painting Guide – The Great Halloween Pumpkin

Method(s):

Undercoat Both models: Chaos Black

Mud:

• Base Coat: Rhinox hide
• Dry Brush: Mornfang brown

Pumpkins:

• Base Coat: Jokaero Orange
• Layer (top 40% of each): Trollslayer Orange
• Shade: Agrax Earthshade (thinned down)
• Highlights: Trollslayer Orange
• Great pumpkin eyes Basecoat:  pro acryl: Bold titanium White then Yriel Yellow
• Great pumpkin eyes Eye Slit: pro acryl: Bold titanium White

Stones:

• Base Coat: Mechanicus Standard Grey
• Dry brush: Dawnstone
• Edge: Grey Seers

Leaves:

• Base Coat: WAAAGH! Flesh
• Layer: Loren Forest
• Edge highlight: A few of each of Krieg Khaki and Skarsnik Green (this produces a nice random real effect)

Vines:

• Base Coat: WAAAGH! Flesh with a drop of Rhinox hide
• Edge highlight: A few of each of Krieg Khaki and Skarsnik Green (this produces a nice random real effect)
• Thorns Basecoat: Rhinox hide
• Thorns Highlight: DoomBull Brown

Cobwebs:

• Basecoat: Ulthuan Grey
• Highlight: pro acryl: Bold titanium White

Crows:

• Base coat: Dark Reaper
• Highlight: Fenrisian Grey

Snail:

• Shell Basecoat: pro acryl: Bold titanium White
• Shell Layer: Flash Gitz Yellow
• Shell Stripes: Abaddon Black
• Snail Body Basecoat: Death Guard Green
• Snail Layer: Nurgle’s Rot

Candles:

• Basecoat: Wraithbone
• Candle Base Wash: Agrax Earthshade
• Flame Layer: Iyanden Yellow (all of it)
• Flame Layer: Gryph-Hound Orange (top half)
• Flame Layer: Blood Angel Red (top quarter)

Paint Time: about 20 hours all told (only because I’m a slow painter)

Notes: To get a decent orange coverage, its much easier to airbrush it, Jokaero Orange followed by Trollslayer Orange highlighted on the top, gave a really good consistency. I have to say on a complex model like this that is done with 3d printing, It’s an absolute son of a devil to paint because of all the little nooks and crannies you can’t take apart to paint. As the base was uneven I had to pad the ground to fit the model evenly and used black Milliput squished in place and then peeled off before it dried, flattened out and then given some grooves to give a muddy earth effect, on the wash over the orange REALLY make sure you water down the agrax, else you end up with hard lines on your orange.
