Trauma

1. Physical injury caused by violent or disruptive action or by the introduction into the body of a toxic substance (e.g., penetrating or blunt serious trauma, drowning, poisoning, burns). 2. Psychic injury resulting from a severe emotional shock.

Trauma center

Medical facility that gives emergency and specialized intensive care to critically ill and severely injured patients due to a major catastrophic event with services provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Generally an emergency department does not have the specialized capabilities and critical patients may need to be transferred to a trauma center for a higher level of care.

Traumatic Injury

An injury to a person’s physical body caused by an outside source, as distinct from physical disability caused by sickness or disease.
