Respite care

Short-term hospice inpatient stay that may be necessary to give temporary relief to the person (primary health care giver) who regularly assists with home care of a patient. This temporary or periodic care may be provided in a nursing home, assisted living residence, or other type of long-term care program. Also known as short-term assisted living care .

Respite care is a benefit to family members of a patient whereby the family is provided with a break or respite from caring for the patient. The patient is confined to a nursing home for needed care for a short period of time.

Respondeat superior

Latin for “let the master answer.” Refers to a physician’s liability in certain cases for the wrongful acts of his or her assistant(s) or employee(s). Also referred to as vicarious liability .

Restraint

Any manual method or physical or mechanical device, material, or equipment attached to or adjacent to a client’s or patient’s body that the individual cannot remove easily and that restricts freedom of movement or normal access to one’s body. Chemical restraints are any drug used for discipline or convenience and not required to treat medical symptoms.
