Transient patients

1. Patients who receive treatment on an episodic basis and are not part of a facility’s regular caseload (i.e., patients who have not been permanently transferred to a facility for ongoing treatment). 2. Patients who temporarily live in a locale but continually move from one region to another. These types of patients may cause collection problems, so initially gathering comprehensive and accurate demographic data is important.

Under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), a software tool for accepting an electronic data interchange (EDI) transmission and converting the information into another format or for converting a non-EDI data file into an EDI format for transmission. Transplant

Surgical procedure that involves removing tissue or a functional organ from either a deceased or living individual (donor) and implanting it in a patient (recipient) that needs a functional organ to replace their nonfunctional one. Also called transplant surgery .

Transportation services

Escort service that provides carrying usually older adults from one place to another such as appointments for medical services. These services accommodate persons in wheelchairs and persons with other special needs. Such services include buses, shuttle vans, taxis, and volunteer drivers.

Trauma

1. Physical injury caused by violent or disruptive action or by the introduction into the body of a toxic substance (e.g., penetrating or blunt serious trauma, drowning, poisoning, burns). 2. Psychic injury resulting from a severe emotional shock.
