United States Public Health Service (USPHS)
Federal government agency founded in 1798 that is in charge of the control of all people and immigrants arriving from foreign countries and products that might affect the health of people in America. It sets standards for domestic handling and processing of food and manufacture of serums, vaccines, cosmetics, and drugs. It is the uniformed service of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. USPHS-commissioned officers serve their country by controlling the spread of contagious diseases such as smallpox and yellow fever, conducting important biomedical research, regulating the food and drug supply, providing health care to underserved groups, and supplying medical assistance in the aftermath of disasters.
United States Uniformed Services identification cards
Insurance card issued to dependents of active duty military members and retirees who are beneficiaries of the TRICARE government program (see Figure U-1 ). Essential information is included on front and back sides of the card. TRICARE Standard active duty dependent’s identification card (DD Form 1173) from which essential information must be abstracted. B , Sample identification card (DD Form 1173) for a retiree’s widowed spouse. Cards indicate 1 , sponsor’s status and rank; 2 , authorization status for treatment by a civilian provider; and 3 , expiration date.
Unitised with profits business
An approach which combines the ‘with profits’ concept with the management structure of a unit-linked life policy. Policyholders receive units in the ‘with profits’ fund and units are priced depending on an annual reversionary bonus. A terminal bonus is added at maturity. Most UK ‘with profits’ business is written on a unitised basis.
Unitization
The packing of single or multiple consignments into ULDs or pallets.
Universal access
Condition of a health benefits system indicating the right of all individuals to receive basic medical services in a health care setting.
Universal average
The application of average to commercial and industrial fire risks on a widespread basis so that virtually no policy is issued without being subject to some form of average.
Universal coverage
System of health care in which every citizen of the United States is covered and may receive medical services, even those who cannot pay for coverage. The United Kingdom and Canada have universal coverage. Also called socialized medicine and statutory health insurance . Also see national health insurance .
Universal Health Insurance Scheme (UHIS) for Health Insurance
Universal Health Insurance Scheme is basically meant for improving the access of health care to poor families. The scheme provides for reimbursement of medical expenses up to Rs. 30,000/- towards hospitalization floated amongst the entire family, death cover due to an accident @ Rs. 25,000/- to the earning head of the family and compensation due to loss of earning of the earning member @ Rs. 50/- per day up to maximum of 15 days. The Universal Health Insurance Scheme (UHIS) has been redesigned targeting only the BPL families. The premium subsidy has been enhanced from Rs. 100 to Rs. 200 for an individual, Rs. 300 for a family of five and Rs. 400 for a family of seven, without any reduction in benefits.
Universal life (Life Insurance)
A policy offering flexible premiums. The policyholder selects the amount of premium he or she wishes to pay and the benefits are then purchased in that amount.
