Certified Health Consultant (CHC)
Certification awarded to an individual who has successfully completed the CHC program. CHCs have a broad knowledge of the field of health care financing, act as consultants to purchasers of employee benefit packages, and are administrators of employee health care benefit programs.
Certified Health Consultant Program
Certification program developed by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association in 1978. It consists of a series of comprehensive examinations that test an individual’s knowledge of health care financing such as health care economics, pricing, underwriting, financing, marketing, and selling. Besides passing each of the examinations, the individual must complete 2 weeks of residency training.
Certified Health Insurance Plan (CHIP)
See: State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Formerly, CHIP was a government-sanctioned cooperative health coverage plan offering one or more basic benefit options with mandated employer, insurer, and provider participation.
Certified mail
Correspondence or documents sent by the U.S. post office and officially marked to whom sent, showing date and address of delivery. This type of mail service is used often by medical offices for collection purposes and important letters (e.g., relocation of a medical practice, closure, dismissal of a patient). When certified mail is received, the receiver must sign a receipt of delivery and the sender is provided with a receipt of the delivery. This receipt remains on file at the receiver’s post office for 2 years.

Certified Medical Billing Specialist (CMBS)
Title received by a person after appropriate training and passing a certification examination administered either by the American Association of Medical Billers in Los Angeles or the Medical Association of Billers in Las Vegas.
Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT)
Professional medical transcriptionist who has passed the written and practical examination offered by the Association for Integrity of Healthcare Documentation, formerly the American Association for Medical Transcription, and who participates in an ongoing program of continuing medical education to increase his or her knowledge of medicine and improve skills in medical transcription.
Certified Nurse Administrator (CNA)
Registered nurse (RN) who holds an administrative position at the nurse manager level or nurse executive level in a health care organization, is responsible for the proper allocation of available resources to provide efficient and effective nursing care, and who possesses evidence of certification by passing a nurse administration certification examination by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
