Free examination period

Specific amount of time after delivery of an insurance policy by the agent during which the policy owner may look the policy over and return it to the insurance company for a complete refund of the first premium payment. Usually, complete insurance coverage is provided during this time period. Also called 10-day free look .

Free look

Period of time, usually 30 days, when an individual can try out a Medigap policy. During that time, if the individual changes his or her mind about keeping the policy, it can be cancelled and any money paid is refunded.

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

Federal law that any person has a right, enforceable in court, of access of federal agency records, except to the extent that such records, or portions thereof, are protected from disclosure by one of nine exemptions or by one of three special law enforcement record exclusions. Requests must be submitted in writing. FOIA applies only to records of the executive branch of the federal government, not to those of Congress or the federal courts, and does not apply to state governments, local governments, or private groups.
