FSMA, s.19, states that no person may carry on a regulated activity in the UK, or purport to do so, unless he is an exempt person or authorised person. Any breach amounts to a criminal offence.

General representative
A person resident in the UK designated as the representative of an insurance company with a head office outside the UK, who is authorised to act generally and accept the service of documents.

A person appointed by Lloyd’s to represent Lloyd’s and Lloyd’s underwriters in a particular country or territory. A General Representative may be a natural person or a company. An agreement between Lloyd’s and the General Representative sets out the General Representative’s duties and responsibilities.

General Underwriters Agreement (GUA)
An agreement born out of LMP 2001 between the (re)insurers who are parties to the slip specifying the terms on which the slip leader acts as agent of the underwriters to deal with alterations, amendments and agreements.

Genetic and Insurance Committee (GAIC)
Set up by the government to develop criteria for evaluation of the scientific, medical and actuarial evidence available to support the use of genetic tests in insurance risk assessment and to evaluate those tests against these criteria. Members come from the insurance industry and clinical and genetic patients groups. The insurance industry has agreed a voluntary code with GAIC whose aim is to ensure that individuals do not avoid tests because they fear a result harmful to their life cover applications.
