Bed capacity, expanded
Space that is available for patient beds in addition to the number of beds that can be occupied in hospital units.
Bed conversion
Changing a bed assigned for one type of care to a bed designated for another type of care such as converting an acute-care bed to a long-term care bed. See also swing bed .
Bed count
Total number of beds maintained by a hospital or inpatient health facility for a designated patient population. Also called bed capacity or bed size .
Bed day, inpatient
Day spent by a patient in an available bed at the hour (midnight) census is taken in the hospital, excluding bassinet days. This includes the patients admitted and discharged for same-day surgeries.

Bed, occupied by transient patient
Hospital bed assigned as of midnight to a patient who is to be moved between medical facilities and who stops to stay over while en route to his or her destination before reaching the next facility.
Bed, operating
Hospital bed ready for the medical care of a patient that includes the space, equipment, and staff. This excludes transient patient beds, bassinets, incubators, labor beds, and recovery beds.
