Painter: Dultoriminis

Model(s): Necromunda Zone Mortalis Columns and Walls

Paint(s): Chaos Black (spray), Mechanicus Standard Grey (spray), Dawnstone, Leadbelcher, Balthasar Gold.

Light only- Baharroth Blue, White Scar.

Method(s):

  1. Spray Chaos Black, once dry, spray Mechanicus Standard Grey but very lightly almost like just a dusting of grey over the black.
  2. Dry brush with Dawnstone over the whole scenery piece.
  3. Pick out pipes and bolts and paint with Leadbelcher and Balthasar Gold.
  4. The following is for lights/ glow only – Paint lights Baharroth Blue.
  5. Dry brush Baharroth Blue, starting from the light source gradually getting less heavy as you move away, stopping about 2/3 of the way down.
  6. Finally add a white line in each section of the light bulb in White Scar.

Paint Time: 45 mins

Notes: Mechanicus Standard Grey can be swapped out for any other colour spray, Zandri Dust for example, but when doing this pick an appropriate lighter colour for dry brush. for example if Zandri Dust was used dry brush Screaming Skull.

With lights the same applies colour can be swapped out for different coloured lights, for example Yriel Yellow or Moot Green could be used instead for both the light source and dry brush.

Painting Guide – Squat Tank

Painter: Dultoriminis

Model(s): Sabre Strike Tank and Armoury and the top half of a first edition Squat Commander

Paint(s): Chaos Black (spray), Leadbelcher (spray), Thousand Sons Blue, Caliban Green, Rakarth Flesh, Grey Seers, White Scar, Abaddon Black, Mephiston Red, Evil Sunz Scarlet, Leadbelcher, Necron Compound, Averland Sunset, Bugmans Glow, Cadian Fleshtone, Tau Light Ochre, Rhinox hide, Mornfang Brown, Skrag Brown, Seraphim Sepia, Drakenhof NightShade, Druchi Violet, Nuln Oil, Agrax Earthshade, Kislev Flesh.

Method(s):

  1. Base metal (rusty/aged look) – start by spraying the whole tank Chaos Black , once dry spray the whole thing again Leadbelcher, once dry wash the whole thing with Nuln Oil, leaving plenty of drying time, wash again, this time with Agrax Earthshade allow plenty of drying time, finally dry brush the whole thing with Necron Compound.
  2. Armour plating – base with a 1:1 mix of Thousand Sons Blue and Caliban Green, wash with Agrax Earthshade but only in the recesses and around rivets, take your base colour mix and add White Scar at a ratio of 2:1 and use this as the highlight colour (this can also be used for any scratches and scuffs), when doing this take your base mix and add Abaddon Black at a ratio of 3:1) now with the scratches you want the highlight mix and lowlight mix painted in parallel to give the illusion of deep scratches. (armour colour also applies to little guy sticking out)
  3. Armour trim – base with 2:1 mix of Rakarth Flesh and Grey Seers, wash around rivets only with Agrax Earthshade, highlight and scratches done with 1:1 mix of Grey Seers and White Scar. ( same applies to armour trim of little guy).
  4. Lights/lenses – base Mephiston Red, layer Evil Sunz Scarlet leaving recesses, dot White Scar in top corner, and paint a thin line in opposite corner to give illusion of lenses flare.
  5. Hazard plates – base Averland Sunset, use transfers or freehand hazard signs, as before wash the bolts only with Agrax Earthshade.
  6. Heated metal on gun barrels – starting from the barrel end wash Drakenhof NightShade, Druchi Violet and Seraphim Sepia.
  7. Rust –  paint random patches of Rhinox hide ( try to think about where water would pool if it rained), inside the Rhinox hide paint Mornfang Brown covering about 1/3 or the Rhinox hide, paint Skrag Brown in small dots within the Mornfang Brown.
  8. Skin – base Bugmans Glow, layer Cadian Fleshtone leaving the recesses, highlight Kislev Flesh. for beard paint Tau Light Ochre and wash with Agrax Earthshade.

Notes: You may ask why spray Chaos Black and then Leadbelcher? the answer to this is that you get a richer and smoother metallic colour than if you skipped the chaos black.

2 fitness tips: Callouses and clean headphones

2 quick fitness tips I use everyday.

TIP 1: Use isopropyl alcohol spray to clean over-ear headphones.

I’ve not met anyone use this but it seems obvious to me, isopropyl alcohol is great for disinfecting and removing bad smells and it also does not upset electronics (its used for cleaning dirty and corroded circuit boards) so therefore it is perfect for cleaning the sweaty ear pads on your headphones without having to take them apart. Make sure you use the 99.9% version, my preferred brand is “Nope”

Tip 2: File calluses from weightlifting and bar work to stop them ripping.

This one seems to be wrapped up in lots of other tips and over complications, but put simply, the calluses you get from lots of weight lifting, using a bar pull-up or that kind of stuff will often rip, and while this might seem mainly it means you have to stop while the bloody things heal, lots of people get special creams and stuff like that to stop it, but what I have found all of the professionals do is just file the damn things flat with what ever they have to hand e.g. nail files, pumice stones etc etc, though I have seen this one recommended a lot.

Me I just use my modelling files, simple.

Painting Guide – Magma Bases

Painter: Stickfight

Model(s): Any Plastic Base

Paint(s): Mephiston Red, Trollslayer Orange, Yriel Yellow, White Scar, Mordant Earth

Method(s): Base with Mephiston Red, next randomly paint Trollslayer Orange in thick river like lines ( there can be lots of lines, various thicknesses and overlapping lines is good), next paint thinner lines of Yriel Yellow within the orange, then paint small dots of White Scar anywhere that the yellow crosses over ( lots of dots of white in various sizes is good.), lastly using a spatula tool layer Mordant Earth on top, this is very thick and gloopy so take your time. leave plenty of time to dry

Paint Time: 30 mins

Notes: the thicker you apply the mordent earth the bigger cracks you’ll get
