Survivorship benefits (Life Insurance)
Funds used to pay annuitants who live longer than is predicted by statistics. These funds are made up of premiums paid by annuitants who died before collecting the amount equal to what they paid in premiums.
Survivorship clause
Life insurance policy provision stating the beneficiary must survive the insured by a specific number of days to receive the death benefit. This clause is usually inserted at the request of the insured. Also referred to as a delay clause or a time clause .

Type of whole life insurance for two people that pays benefits only when the second person dies. This type of insurance is usually obtained to help pay estate taxes. Also called second-to-die life insurance .

Suspense period
Time span or hold period following discharge of a hospitalized patient in which the patient’s financial account remains available for charges and services before it drops into the claim-submission queue. Once this period passes, the account is deemed “unbilled.” This hold period is established by the hospital’s finance department.

Preparation of a liquid drug in which the particles are undissolved and must be mixed by stirring or shaking before administration.
