Dialysis facility
Unit (hospital based or freestanding) that is approved to furnish dialysis services directly to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients.
Dialysis station
Portion of the dialysis patient treatment area that accommodates the equipment necessary to provide a hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis treatment. This station must have sufficient area to house a chair or bed, the dialysis equipment, and emergency equipment if needed. Provision for privacy is ordinarily supplied by drapes or screens.
diethylstilbestrol (DES)
Drug given to pregnant women from the early 1940s until 1971 to help with common problems during pregnancy. The drug has been linked to cancer of the cervix or vagina in women whose mothers took the drug while pregnant.

1. Pertaining to fingers or toes. 2. Of or relating to the technology of computers and data communications wherein all information is encoded as bits of 1s or 0s (binary digits) that represent electrical on or off signals and can be stored in computer memory.
Digital certificate
Electronic credential that establishes one’s identity.
Digital fax claim
Insurance claim sent to the insurance carrier via facsimile but never printed on paper. The fax is encoded with an electronic signal via an optical code reader and electronically entered into the claims processing system.
Digital imaging and communications in medicine
Standard for communicating images such as x-rays in a digitized form. This standard could become part of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) claim attachments standards.
digital rectal examination (DRE)
Clinical examination of an individual’s prostate for nodules or other abnormalities.
Digital signature
1. In an electronic document, a signature that consists of lines of text or a text box stating the signer’s name, date/time, and a statement indicating a signature has been attached from within a software application. 2. Electronically encrypted certification called public key infrastructure that is added to electronic documents to verify the identity of the signer. It is mandated in the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act for electronic prescriptions and other online documents.
